I Wish I Had 4 Arms

This was us boarding on John’s first flight. He was just 10.5 weeks old. I could have used an extra set of hands. I often wonder why women don’t grow and extra pair of arms during pregnancy. Wouldn’t that be convenient?

DSCN1199

Since I can’t have four arms, I would normally recommend you use a carrier, whether front-pack, sling, or the clever combination of the Gogo Babyz Sidekick Diaper Bag/Carrier when flying with an infant. Unfortunately for this first flight I couldn’t use one because John’s reflux made him uncomfortable in carriers. (I since discovered that he loves the GoGoBabyz Sidekick, but I didn’t have it then as he was a little young still for it since he didn’t have good head control yet.)

Do you have a baby? You can win John’s favorite carrier, the GoGoBabyz Sidekick! Our giveaway is HERE. Be sure to comment on that post and then click on the Rafflecopter link to mark that you commented to earn an entry. You can earn even more entries if you follow us and GoGoBabyz on Facebook or Twitter. Not on those? We’re also on Google+! Hurry to enter! Ends 7/28/13 at 11:59EST!

How to Bathe Infants Without a Tub

At home you probably have a nice little infant tub for bathing your baby. But what will you do when you travel? Once baby can sit up it’s not so hard to bathe him in the tub, but before that it’s one slippery mess trying to hold onto him  and wash him at the same time while bending down into the giant tub.

One solution is to get in the tub with your baby. Then you can hold him and wash him. If you’re not up for taking a bath yourself or if there isn’t a bathtub where you are, then the best solution I’ve found is to go ahead and bathe the baby in the sink. At six months John is pretty big for this small sink, but since he’s not quite sitting on his own yet, it’s my only option and actually works quite well.

Here are the items that help make bathing when away from home easier:

Bath for Baby Traveling

  • Hooded towel
  • Baby washcloth
  • Gentle shampoo/body wash combo (We love Aquaphor Gentle Wash & Shampoo)
  • Squirt Bottle
  • Hand towel (put in sink to keep baby from slipping)

I bring all but the hand towel from home. You can use an empty dish soap bottle for the squirt bottle. I fill the squirt bottle with warm water as I’m filling the sink and use it to rinse baby’s hair and body. The squirt bottle can then become a bath toy as you squirt water and the baby tries to “catch” it. This is John’s favorite bath game. None of these items are absolute necessities, but they help make the bath go more smoothly.

DSCN3273

To me having a baby towel is helpful. I hold the top corner in my mouth and then lift up John and place him in the center of the towel then put the hood over his head. Then he’s easily wrapped up and even the squirmiest baby is kept safe from slipping.

That’s it! Easy bathing on-the-go.

Review and Giveaway: GoGo Babyz Sidekick

Giveaway ended 7/28/13. Winners are posted below.

I have been intrigued by the clever invention of the GoGo Babyz Sidekick Diaper Bag/Baby Carrier combo since it was released in 2010. Ella was too old for it then and I wanted so badly to try it out. I prayed for another baby just so I could. (Okay, that’s not the only reason I wanted another baby, but it was a strong influence. LOL)

After baby John was born I talked with GoGo Babyz and they agreed to let me review the Sidekick. The best part is they are sponsoring this giveaway of TWO Sidekick Diaper Bag/Baby Carriers!!!!

The Review:

In my bag

When I first transferred my things from my old diaper bag to the Sidekick, I thought it was a little bit small. But once I got things organized I realized that it was the perfect size and easily fit everything I needed, including my small clutch purse. Here is the bag as I pack it:

Diaper Bag

The unique thing about the Sidekick is that it has a baby carrier attached to it. This is so cool because even though it’s not that much of a hassle to put on a baby carrier, it does take up quite a bit of space in your bag. With the Sidekick you don’t have to worry about that since the carrier folds nicely in the top flap. Unlike other carriers, this holds the baby on your side, as the name implies. (I have found I can also shift John to the front if needed to fit through tight spaces like down the aircraft aisle.)

It’s easy to set up as a carrier. Simply take the shoulder strap and buckle it around your waist. Tighten to your comfort then put the carrier strap over your shoulder. You can either put the baby in and then lift the strap over your shoulder, or slide the baby in through the top. Now that John is a bit taller I find it’s easier to put the strap over my shoulder and then slide him in through the top. If I put the strap over baby’s and my head I found it worked better if I moved John to my front instead of my side.

John was so comfortable in this carrier that he slept at 2 parties and a gymnastics expo. (along with the help of his Zoë b Sleepy Hat). It was comfortable for me to carry him in it for over 2 hours.

diaper bag baby carrier

I love using Sidekick for darting in and out of stores when I don’t want to bring the entire stroller but want the diaper bag with me “just in case”. It was great for the airplane. I used the Sidekick to carry John and it gave me both hands free. I was able to carry the diaper bag (wearing it), the baby, a backpack, a lunch tote, and the car seat down the aisle all by myself!

DSCN3234

Here’s another time the Sidekick proved useful for me: climbing up 41 steep steps from the pool to the house. I needed to carry 2 bags and a coffee cup in my hands and was able to do that while carrying John (and the diaper bag) and having a hand to hold the rail for safety. Impressive, no?

Best Travel Products

The only problem I had with the Sidekick was when storing 8 oz. bottles in the side pockets, John’s feet sometimes knocked off the lids. This didn’t bother me enough to change the bottles I was using or put them in a different location.

The Sidekick comes with a nice changing pad that folds compactly and fits nicely at the bottom or side of the bag. It also has an insulated bottle/snack pouch. I didn’t ever use the insulated pouch, but it’s got a great feature of a snapping strap so you can attach it to the outside of the diaper bag if you don’t have room for it inside.

The GoGo Babyz Sidekick comes in three models: Bliss, Shift, and Deluxe. They all share the following features:

  • Versatile – wear over your shoulder, around your waist, or across your shoulder
  • Adjustable strap allows you to carry your baby on either hip
  • Baby-friendly fabric easily wipes clean
  • Key clip, cell phone pocket, and many easily accessed pockets for essentials
  • Double side pockets for bottles or sippy cups
  • Removable insulated bottle/snack pouch and changing pad
  • Designed for use by babies with good head control, weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Dimensions: 12″ high x 15″ wide x 4″ deep

The Bliss ($120)  and the Shift ($125) are the same material and the Shift adds the feature of a removable carrier strap so you can use it as just a diaper bag, if preferred. The Sidekick Deluxe  ($130) adds these features:

  • Luxe interior fabric with contrasting pattern design
  • leather bottom & trim features
  • additional pockets for storing essentials

The Giveaway:

I am using the Sidekick Deluxe for myself because my husband doesn’t want to use it as a carrier (he would rather just hold the baby). He said if he were to use it that way he would prefer the more basic design with more masculine colors. I wanted to offer versatility to you on this giveaway, so I chose to offer the Sidekick Bliss in Charcoal and the Sidekick Shift in Black. I’m hoping that the neutral colors will encourage the dads to enter and be excited about the Sidekick too.

The giveaway will be run through Rafflecopter and 2 winners will be randomly chosen from the entries. I will not use the information provided for any reason except to contact the winners. I will give the Sidekick Shift to the first winner and the Sidekick Bliss to the second winner drawn.

Disclosure: I received a GoGo Babyz Sidekick Diaper Bag/Carrier for review and 2 to giveaway. I am not otherwise compensated for this review. My opinions are my own and I will never recommend a product that I wouldn’t use myself.

To enter, click on the Rafflecopter entry. A blog comment is mandatory and will give you one entry. Tell us your favorite GoGo Babyz product (check them out here) or why you’d like the Sidekick. But don’t stop there! Increase your chances of winning! You can earn up to 11 additional entries (optional) if you follow Cloud Surfing Kids and GoGo Babyz on Facebook and/or Twitter (if not, you can sign up and earn an entry) and/or tweeting about the giveaway. An Open Letter to Disgruntled Passengers

Have you ever had a really bad day flying where everything seems to go wrong? It’s easy to blame the flight attendants, the gate agents, and the airline. I regularly hear passengers at all airlines swear, “I’m never flying THIS airline again!”, not realizing that the troubles like weather-related flight delays, mechanical problems, and the occasional misplaced bag or catering issue occur at every airline. Some days bad stuff just happens. If you’re tempted to complain about how awful air travel is, read this letter from guest blogger Steve Gould*:

DFWSpirit 6_13_2013 085-HDR

Working First Class yesterday when a passenger asked whether his luggage would make his connecting flight. When I told him it may not, he rolled his eyes , shook his head and said “flying is HORRIBLE.”

Allow me to offer a bit of perspective, sir. You are sitting in what amounts to a reclining chair, sipping a vodka tonic. While enjoying your drink, you are hurtling along at 600mph toward your destination, six miles in the air. In a moment you will enjoy a grilled salmon salad with fresh mango that is actually quite good. While you wait for your meal you will be connected to a worldwide network of computers that offers nearly instantaneous access to the accumulated knowledge of all of mankind. You will arrive at your destination safely three hours later. A journey of over 1500 miles that not long ago would have taken months, if you survived at all.

Hub on wagon

Flying is not ‘horrible’. Being a woman in Afghanistan is horrible. Being a Christian in Lebanon or Syria is horrible. Being diagnosed with liver cancer and told you have only months to live without a transplant is horrible. Flying is not horrible. Inconvenient sometimes, but not horrible.

Along with a bit of perspective, how about a little free market economics? The airline industry in the US is EXACTLY what the travelling public has determined it is willing to pay for. There are alternatives. You can charter a jet and go anywhere, anytime. But it’s expensive. Commercial air travel is faster, safer and offers more choice for less money than ever before in history. Along with that comes the crowded airplanes and terminals. Sorry. You want privacy and a quiet peaceful experience? Fine. It’ll cost ya.

Untitled_Panorama1 Small

The airline industry is an enormously large and complicated enterprise. And it is almost entirely dependent upon the Federal government and the weather.
Almost everything you hate about flying, all those delays and pesky rules, are a direct consequence of one or both of those things. It is the Federal government regulations that tell you that you can’t have your cell phone on. When to have your seat back upright and tray table stowed. How many pieces of carry on you can have and where you must put them. When you must sit down and fasten your seatbelt. When the plane can take off. The route it must take to get where it is going and when it can land. What minor mechanical problems can be deferred and which one must be fixed before the plane flies again.

And then there’s the weather.

Given all of this, it’s a minor miracle that around 80% of all flights arrive within 15 minutes of schedule.

So next time you’re tempted to tell me how ‘horrible’ it is to fly…….don’t.

Travel Toothpaste for only $0.13—No Coupons Needed! (expired)

This deal expired on 6/22/13. If you want more posts like this one, comment below to let me know!

This Cloud Surfing Mom is also a couponer. I’m always looking for a bargain and it’s hard for me to pay full price for anything! I was so excited to stumble upon this great deal! I was able to get 8 travel tubes for only $0.98!

This week CVS has a deal where you get $2 ExtraBucks© rewards when you buy Colgate Multi-Pack toothpaste. At my local store this included the travel size multi-pack! The Colgate Total Advanced travel 4 pack costs only $3.49, so after the $3 ExtraBucks© it’s like paying only $0.13 each! Sure beats paying $3 for just one at the airport! (The way this works is you’ll pay $7 + tax if applicable and the register will print out $6 for you to use on another transaction. I like to use them right away so I don’t forget and let them expire.)

travel toothpaste

These will sell out fast, but the great thing about CVS is their rain check policy includes the ExtraBucks©! Be sure to ask for a rain check if they’re out. Their rain checks never expire! *Limit 2 per household with card. Valid 6/16-6/22

Can’t think of anything you want there for $6? Get this great 15 piece Travel Toiletries set for $10.99 (pay only $4.99 after you give them the $6 ExtraBucks© you earned). I love this particular set because of the small tubs included. They are really big enough to hold enough face lotion and cleanser for a week-long trip! This also comes with a small spray bottle which I use for my face toner, but could be great for hair detangler for the kids! This particular bag I don’t see often, so if your CVS store has it I highly recommend you buy it NOW! It’s the perfect travel kit. You will thank me.

Unexpected Fun

I always emphasize that when traveling with kids you should bring plenty of toys and activities to keep them occupied. For an idea on what toys I pack for a toddler, click here. However, it’s also important to be open to “non-toy” items that can entertain. With infants it can be quite entertaining  to see what catches their interest. When Ella was between 3-7 months she was obsessed with lamp posts and ceiling fans. She would carry on lengthy “conversations” with them.

On my last flight with John he discovered the arm rest. The push button and tiny silver screw were so interesting to him. He “talked” loudly to this armrest for 10 minutes. I tried to keep him from being too loud, but couldn’t help but smile at his fascination. Who would have thought an armrest would provide such a great distraction?

What unexpected things do/did your babies or kids like that keep them occupied for a while?

What’s In My Bag (Flying with Infant)

When flying with infant I prefer to pack a diaper bag as well as a carry on backpack.  I feel like I can keep things better organized and more quickly accessible in the diaper bag. Then I pack the back up and emergency items in the backpack. Here is what I am packing in my backpack for my flight with John tomorrow:

flying with infant

  • thin baby blanket
  • BabyLegs (versatile leg/arm warmers)
  • spare diaper wipes
  • Teething medicine
  • Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer
  • cozy socks
  • spare diapers (Pack enough for 48 hours between this bag and diaper bag. I’m packing 14 diapers.)
  • Kleenex
  • ponytail holder
  • spare small can of formula
  • spare bottle
  • change of clothes (baby)
  • change of clothes (me)
  • Quart sized Ziploc bag of liquids (contact solution, lotion, medicines, toothpaste)
  • prescription medicine
  • spare battery charger
  • medicine (for me here it’s allergy medicine and emergency meds like Tums and chewable Pepto
  • Hand Sanitizing Wipes
  • Spare tote bag
  • Glasses
  • Passport
  • Sweater (for me)
  • Galaxy Tablet
  • Snacks (my snack this trip are: Luna Bar, Planters NUT-rition bar, Cashews, Mint M&Ms, Fruit Leather, Lollipops, Tea, Starbucks VIA, Special K Protein Water Mix
  • (not pictured) Phone and Tablet Chargers
  • Spare bottle

**At the airport I will buy 2 large bottles of water and will add these to the backpack.

My diaper bag will have all of the items I pack on a daily basis including a change of clothes, toys, diapers wipes and bottles as well as my wallet and lipstick. I wrote a post on packing the diaper bag and you can find it here.

If Ella were traveling with us also I would add a change of clothes for her and her toy bag. Recently I have been putting her toys in a gallon sized Ziploc Bag and then carrying it in the backpack. Would you add anything when for a flying with infant carry-on bag?

Tide Pools

I’m planning to soon write a post on some things we love to do in San Diego that aren’t the top tourist things. One of those is visiting the tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument. This is from our visit there last year. Have you ever been there?
