Summer Giveaway: Inflight Entertainment

*Update 6/6/2013  This Giveaway is now closed. The winner is Cloud Surfing Fan Rebecca. Her summer travel this year includes camping in Connecticut! Thanks to all who participated. Stay tuned for more fun giveaways soon!

I can’t believe last week was the end of school for so many! It sneaked up on me as Ella still has two weeks left. Have any of you started summer travel yet?

One of my favorite things to pack when traveling with the kids is a dry erase board. Toddlers can write on one using dry-erase crayons while dry-erase markers work fine for older children. The only downside is that a drawing can’t be saved. Sometimes Ella is so proud of her work she doesn’t want to erase it. When this happens I just get my camera out and take a picture; then we have a permanent record of the drawing. I like to make photo books of my collection of photos of Ella’s artwork (I do this for her art from school too).

I’ve learned to hold off commenting on what it is I think she has drawn and to instead say, “Tell me about this drawing”. Often it is something unexpected and she might even throw in an entertaining story to go with it.

DSCN7558

I never would have guessed it, but this is “Doodler” from the app “Doodle Jump”. Ella might have been offended if I immediately commented on the cute 6-legged spider she drew. Good thing I asked first!

I’m giving away 2 dry-erase boards with dry-erase markers and erasers. BUT WAIT!!! That’s not all! Smile

The rest of the prize will be a surprise. I’ll create a small pack of things for your kids for their carry-on pack to create a total prize value of $15 or more.

Easy Entry: Just comment on this blog post telling me where your family is traveling this summer (mandatory entry +1). To earn more entries LIKE us on Facebook (+1) and/or on Twitter (+1).

If I get a lot of participation on this one I’ll set up a much bigger giveaway next time.

Grand Old Flag (Photo Friday)

Liberty Station

This is our favorite flag in one of our favorite cities to visit. It is in the old Naval Training Center in San Diego, which has now become a beautiful neighborhood with houses, townhomes, shops, hotels, parks, and recreation. We lived there for 8 years before moving to New York. I’ll write more soon about Liberty Station and all there is to do there. You could spend a weeks’ vacation there without even leaving the “base”!

Every time we passed by this flag we would sing “You’re a Grand Old Flag”. Ella always likes to finish it off with jumping up an octave on the final “fla-AG!” I’m thinking of this beautiful flag this Memorial Day weekend. Looking at it I’m always reminded of the men and women who gave their lives for our country so we could be safe and free. Be sure you instill a respect of the flag and our military in your child. Read my Memorial Day post from last year to see another way I teach my kids about honoring our military here.

Finding Inspiration

We have a subscription to Condé Nast Traveler Magazine. I actually used to think this magazine was for the rich elite. I never took the time to look at the by-line: Truth In Travel. Their description on Twitter is: “Truth in Travel is our guiding principle: Condé Nast Traveler always pays its own way, and, as much as possible, its correspondents travel anonymously.” How cool, right?

Traveler Magazinetraveling

Well, Ella go a hold of the magazine and decided to look for our next place to visit. She landed on a lovely Brazilian resort. Perfect! Now if only we could get someone to send us there. Winking smileWhat kinds of things do you do/share to encourage your child’s love for travel?

Lotion Bar Giveaway

It’s happened to all of us at one time or another…Your first thought might be, “Wow! My luggage sure smells nice!” Then your brain starts to remind you that luggage doesn’t usually have a particular odor, and if it did, it wouldn’t normally be considered “nice”.

You start trying to remember which of your toiletries has that particular smell…it’s your lotion…the tiny bottle of  lotion you wasted $1.25 on to stay within the 3 oz. TSA rule…and the while the flip lid stayed shut, the cap somehow untwisted itself with the change in cabin pressure. Now there your clothes are covered in lotion (how does such a small amount of lotion make such a big mess?) and your next chance to do laundry is in 3 days. Not good.

airplane pressure

This has happened to me more times than I can count. Now I always pack lotion and shampoo bottles within Ziploc bags and I tape them shut with electrical tape, but every once in a while I still experience leaky bottles. There’s a solution:

Jordan Essentials Lotion Bar

Jordan Essentials Lotion Bar

I tested this lotion bar and was quite impressed. Using it after my shower, it rubbed softly onto my skin and felt as moisturizing as liquid lotion, but without the gooey feeling. When using it on my feet I actually felt like it was even better than regular lotion. It absorbed right away and left my feet feeling soft, not sticky.

Ella became my second tester. It was so easy for her to use by herself and I didn’t have to worry about her spilling lotion or squirting too much and becoming a greasy mess.

DSCN2257

I wanted to experiment a little with different ways to use it. I tried it in the shower and used it as a shaving lotion. It worked great for that and left my skin soft and smooth so I didn’t have to apply any after I dried off. If you plan to use it as a shaving lotion, though, I would recommend using disposable razors because the lotion did clog the razor. I still got a close shave in spite of that.

I get eczema on my legs but when I used this lotion bar after every shower, the irritation was gone. That’s a big deal for me, because usually I have to apply lotion twice a day to keep the eczema from irritating me. With the lotion bar I was fine until the next shower.

Jordan Essentials Lotion Bars come in a variety of scents. We chose the Oatmeal Milk & Honey, wanting something not to perfumed so that it was versatile for anyone to use. It has a very pleasant scent. With my post-pregnancy hormones it was actually a bit too strong smelling for me to use on my upper body at first, but I noticed that this week it didn’t bother me at all. And Ella always loved the smell of it.

DSCN2260

Jordan Essentials Lotion Bar comes in a metal tin and is perfect for travel. If you travel with carry on bags only, you don’t have to worry about removing this from your bag for the security checks. And whether you carry on or check your bags, it’s so nice not having to worry about your lotion spilling everywhere. I love it for kids since there is no mess involved in applying it. Ella loved it because she got to apply it completely herself, with no help from me. Kids love to be independent!

I also love that it’s chemical free. It feels good to use natural ingredients that you know won’t cause harm to your body.

Want to try it? You can win your own Jordan Essentials Lotion Bar. We are teaming up with Lydia’s Jordan Essentials to give away one lotion bar in Oatmeal & Honey scent to a lucky reader. Details and entry form are below. Good luck!

National Train Day 2013

Tickets Please

Okay, so it’s not about planes, but as a family who loves travel, we not only love airplanes but also trains. Today is National Train Day. Many cities have events celebrating the day. Somehow the last 2 years we were always flying and missing the celebrations. I was hoping that this year we would get to participate and was so disappointed to learn that New York City was not holding an event this time.

I actually forgot that today was National Train Day, but fittingly my husband decided to take Ella on one of their favorite short train trips to a bakery in a nearby town. It’s the perfect trip to take with young kids, just two stops, then get off and get a treat at the bakery and take a return train back home.

We have fun on all trains, but here are some shots of us on a beautiful old steam train on the Abilene & Smokey Valley Railroad in Abilene, Kansas…not too comfortable with wooden benches and no air conditioning, but it is such a beautiful train!

Licking Lollipops

This week I go back in time to when Ella was just 2.5. We kept her from eating candy at all until she was two. This paid off on flights because I was able to use lollipops to motivate her to get in her seat and buckle up or to turn off electronics when it was time for landing (since they were still an exciting treat). Some people look down on this, calling it a bribe, but I think that treats, used with discretion, are great motivators. And look at the complete enjoyment she got upon receiving this rare treat!

(Travel tip: When giving a toddler a lollipop, I advise first putting a bib on them, pulling hair back from their face, and having several baby wipes nearby.)Smile

Long Island Aquarium

Last week we finally made the short drive out to the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center. What a great place! Ella loved watching all the sea creatures there and even holding a star fish! Of course I expected her to love it, as she really adores all creatures, great and small, and has really enjoyed all of the aquariums we have visited before. I was impressed, though, at how much 3.5 month old John enjoyed it. He was very engaged and loved watching the creatures swim around. He seemed especially interested in the sea turtle.Long Island Aquarium

I think we are going to start “collecting” aquariums. Any time we visit a new place we will make it our goal to visit the aquarium, if there is one there. I guess that the next aquarium we visit will probably be the Dallas World Aquarium since we often visit family in TX and even though I grew up there, I have still never been to the Dallas Aquarium.

Do you have a favorite aquarium to visit?

Newport Eaton’s Beach (First Beach): One Day Getaway

I’m reminiscing about our trip to Newport last summer. One of our favorite spots to go to is Easton’s Beach. You can spend the whole day there and not get bored. Where else can you go from playground to carousel to aquarium to café to beach without driving all over creation? We always visit Newport in late September and there are no crowds at all.

Take a look at my latest post of tips for traveling with kids: Flying with a Colicky Baby

Flying with a Colicky Baby

Fussy Baby

We took John on his first flight at 10.5 weeks. His colic/reflux was bad and he wasn’t happy very often. Although he wasn’t thrilled with the flight, I was able to keep him basically content and mostly quiet. Each baby and each day is different with a colicky baby, so I won’t claim that these tips will work every time. If you have a colicky baby you know that some things work one day and not the next. But here’s what worked for us on this flight:

Buy a Seat for Baby (even if you don’t use it)

Newborn Sleeping

Normally I would advise everyone to use a car seat for their infant on the plane, as it is unquestionably the safest way to travel. The problem for us was that John was very uncomfortable in his car seat and screamed any time he was buckled in. The buckle hits right in the middle of the infant’s tummy and when they are having tummy troubles it only adds to the pain. I held John in my lap on this first flight, but I quickly realized how much better it would be if we had a little more room. If I had purchased a seat for him then he could have stretched out and I think it would have helped him relax a little more. He wasn’t too thrilled with being on my shoulder the whole flight. Also if you’re lucky enough your baby will be lulled by the sound of the engines and sleep through much of the flight and it will be nice to put the baby down for a little bit and give your arms a break. (Most infants DO sleep the majority of the flight. Mine didn’t, but most do. Your chances are good.)

Feed Without a Schedule

If you are breastfeeding and that comforts your fussy baby, go ahead and let them use you as a pacifier as much as they want throughout the flight. Don’t worry about any judgmental stares from ignorant passengers. If you wear a nursing tank and a button-down shirt you can nurse very modestly even if your baby won’t tolerate a nursing cover.  Most passengers will be happy that you are doing what you can to soothe your baby. If you’ve introduced a bottle, bring a couple as a back up in case your baby suddenly decides he/she does not like to nurse in public.

If you are bottle feeding, don’t worry too much about the normal schedule you have for feeding. You can get back on that after the flight. For now do what you need to make your baby happy. Keep in mind, though, that a gassy belly will be worse with the air pressure in flight. Be sure to burp your baby often and have lots of burp cloths available. If you overfeed you risk a big mess from spit up.

If your baby likes a pacifier be sure to bring several. Chances are they will be dropped and you do not want to stick that thing in your precious baby’s mouth after it’s been on the aircraft floor. EWWW!  You might want to pack these paci wipes and use a paci clip.

Bring SEVERAL Changes of Clothes

When traveling with any child you should have at least one full change of clothes; with infants at least two. But if your infant has reflux, the chances of that spit up becoming projectile vomiting within the pressurized cabin are high. I was “lucky”. John has silent reflux, so he doesn’t often spit up. He did once on this first flight and that was because he over ate just a bit. We did experience what seems to be mandatory initiation for a baby’s first flight: Diaper Blowout. It was a big one. I was so grateful that I packed anticipating it. A fresh shirt for me was necessary and a complete outfit for John.

Say “CH” Instead of “SHUSH”

DSCN1973

A shushing sound can be soothing for an infant, but it sure is irritating to others! It might just be me, but I think that  “CH” sounds less harsh than “SHHH”. It seems to travel over sound waves just a little bit less, while still soothing the baby. Give it a try. Smile

Accept Offers of Help

.

Don’t be too proud to accept offers of help from other passengers. There is a big difference between accepting help and expecting help. This wonderful woman (so sorry I forgot her name!) offered at the beginning of the flight to hold John anytime I needed a break. I didn’t really get a chance at first to take her up on her offer. But when it was time to deplane it was nearly impossible to  collect our bags from under the seats without smashing John in my arms. He refused to be worn in a sling since it put extra pressure on his hurting stomach. This kind stranger noticed my struggle and again offered to hold John. As she did this he actually enjoyed the change of scenery and calmed down a little bit and I was able to very quickly gather our belongings so we could deplane. Don’t freak out about a “stranger” holding your baby. They are in your presence and trapped in a metal tube with you. There is no shame in accepting help.

Realize Most Everyone Sympathizes With You

2BearsHug

If all else fails and your poor baby cries the entire flight (this happened to my sister when she was traveling alone with her 3 children…so tough!), just realize that most of the people on the flight are sympathetic to you. If they’re not, they don’t deserve your consideration. Most people can tell if a baby or child is crying because they are hurting vs. crying because they are brats. Don’t put extra pressure on yourself trying to please other passengers. When you have a colicky baby your focus has to be on them and on your coping mechanisms. Try to remember to take a breath when you can. Do what you can to soothe your poor little one, but don’t worry about glares from others. Those are normally reserved for parents who don’t try to interact with and help their children.
