Caption This! (Plus Travel Tip for Infants)

DSCN1213

I’m still in the process of surviving an infant with colic who doesn’t sleep during the day (fortunately he does sleep at night, although he wakes up several times). My post about traveling with colicky infants will have to wait because I have to choose between writing and sleeping and I hardly get any sleep as it is. But here’s a photo from John’s first flight. We found that the little car seat hang toys stick easily by their Velcro onto the seat backs, making a perfect way to entertain the baby. (He loves that little butterfly!)

I love his hand on his chin as if he is stroking his beard in deep thought. I’m not clever at writing captions. Can you think of one for this? Comment below!

Infant First Flight

Finally the day has come! John has been waiting his whole life to fly on an airplane!

At last, at 10 weeks, 5 days old he got to experience the mystery of flight. I would be lying if I said he loved it. He wasn’t terrible, but he wasn’t wonderful either. You can read my tips on Flying With Colicky Babies here. For now, I share this picture of his first time in the cockpit. He wasn’t quite sure what to think.

Travel Tip: Find Fun Anywhere

Of course it’s stressful flying these days. Especially with kids. But if you slow down and take some time to have fun, your kids will be less stressed and better behaved. That’s good for everyone! Like most children, Ella used to be terrified of the loud hand dryers. But now that the noise doesn’t scare her, she has a lot of fun playing with the wind! It’s great to let her mind explore before being trapped in a steel tube for hours.

Upcoming Post: Flying with Colicky Babies

Well, I would like to write about flying with fussy babies from my observations than from my experience. But poor baby John has horrible reflux and we are flying next week. So…after our flights and once I can get him to sleep for more than 20 minutes in the day I will write a post with tips on surviving the flight with a super-fussy cutie pie. Be sure to check back!

How to Get Your Child to Buckle Up

Today’s high wind advisories across half the country have me thinking about turbulence and staying safe by buckling up in flight. Here’s a chart of the projected turbulence for today. Green areas are moderate (AIRMETS), red are severe (SIGMETS). The numbers inside of each area show which altitudes that the advisory is for. For example, 400-240 would mean 40,000 feet down through 24,000 feet (add two zeros to convert to feet). SFC indicates the ground.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority states: “In-flight turbulence is the leading cause of injuries to passengers and crew. Occupants injured during turbulence are usually not wearing seatbelts, ignoring recommendations to keep seatbelts fastened even when the signs are not illuminated. It is recognized that passengers need to move around the cabin to use restroom facilities or to exercise on long flights. However you should keep your seatbelt fastened at all times when seated.” This statement is echoed by the FAA and other air safety authorities.

The trouble is, most toddlers and preschoolers are not too keen on being buckled up for hours. As parents, we want to keep our children safe, but we also don’t want them throwing tantrums while trapped in a metal tube with over 100 other passengers to glare at us.

Here are a few ideas on how to get your child to buckle up when he’s not in the mood:

Incentives:

star lollipop2

Some call them bribes, I call them incentives. Avoiding sugar is a good and healthy thing, but in flight on a long travel day the offer of a sweet treat can be wonderfully motivating for a young child. My favorite treat to convince Ella it was worth getting in her seat was lollipops. You can find organic ones, sugar free ones…any sort that you’re comfortable with. We like YummyEarth Organic Lollipops. Saf-T Pops are nice for the younger toddlers so you don’t have to worry so much about the stick poking down their throat.

Invoke favorite characters

When I’m working as a flight attendant and see a young child who doesn’t want to buckle up, I always remind them that Dora always buckles up. “What does she say? ‘SEATBELTS! So we can be safe!’” Amazingly this usually gets the child to agree to fasten their seatbelt, even if they’re not a huge Dora fan. It gives them something familiar with which they can relate.

Your child may take instruction from a character more easily than from you.

Keep your child in the car seat

It might be a little bit of a hassle, but the safest way for your young child to travel is in a car seat. Parents report that when they use the car seat for every flight from the start and keep their child in it except for a few stretching a potty breaks, the child is more likely to stay seated without a fuss. They are already comfortable traveling in the car in their car seat and never expect to be unbuckled in the car, so you are keeping things consistent for them. When a child knows what to expect they are much more cooperative. The best way I’ve found to travel with a car seat is to use Go-Go Babyz TravelMate Original, Deluxe, Deluxe Cruizer, or Luggage Strap. You don’t have to break the bank. The Luggage Strap is only $19.99!  Here is my review on the Cruizer. Note they have made even more improvements on it since my review.

Lap Children aren’t Invincible

Finally, if you are holding an infant in your lap, remember to keep him safe too. I am amazed when I see a parent bouncing an infant up to the ceiling during turbulence. If the plane is bouncing up and down and you bounce your child up when the plane is dropping down, the child is going to be hit on the head. When the seatbelt sign is on, hold on tightly to a child not buckled up.

You shouldn’t be fearful of turbulence. Most injuries from turbulence occur when the passenger or crewmember is not buckled up safely. If you do find turbulence frightening, you might benefit from this site: http://www.fearofflying.com/

Dreaming of Disney

It’s 21 degrees here right now and lightly snowing. It’s making me reminisce about our trip to Disney World last October. We’ve all had Disney on our minds this week. My newborn is only 3 weeks old and Ella asked if he’s big enough yet to go to Disney…maybe in a few months….

I love the happy memory of Ella walking around with her Mickey Mouse balloon. The air was so humid that my camera fogged up, but the memory is captured just the same. Come to think of it, I dislike hot, humid days as much as frigid, cold days. Maybe I need to move back to San Diego…

**Disney tip: If you buy a balloon, buy it on the first day of the trip so it can be enjoyed for the remaining days there. You won’t be able to take it with you on the plane. (We went straight from 3 days at Disney to a 3-Day Disney Cruise—of course the helium balloon could not be brought through customs either.)

A New Era

In airline news this week bankrupt American Airlines revealed their new logo and paint job, striving for a new look signifying a new era. I am partial to their vintage look and will miss the eagle (although the logo is meant to be an eagle’s beak and wings). Here’s the airline’s new look:

Kids don’t care what airplanes and logos look like, but if we showed them photos and asked, I’m betting they would prefer this paint job:

Here’s a photo of “Cloud Surfer” Ella pretending to be surfing on the the airplane in the background:

It’s hard to imagine that this airplane and this look will be only a memory when Ella is grown. I hope the airline succeeds and emerges from bankruptcy to once again be the respected air carrier it used to be.

What do you think of the new logo and paint job? Which airline’s planes have the design you like best?

Welcome to the newest Cloud Surfing Kid!

Sorry I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks. Here’s the reason:

Sibling love

We welcomed our second born, a son, on 1-3-13. John was born at 0808 and weighed 8lbs. 14 oz. Ella is over the moon in love with her little brother. So am I. We are still in rest mode, recovering from the big event, but everyone is well. I’m looking forward to bringing you more information about traveling with infants and traveling with multiple children in the coming months.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about your upcoming travels, please feel free to contact me via Facebook, Twitter,, or email: cloudsurfers@hotmail.com. If you are a vendor and would like me to review your baby travel products, please contact me for my honest opinion.

New Year’s Eve–The Best Time to Fly

How I Met My Husband on New Year’s Eve

Do you ever take flights on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day? It’s typically a great time to find light loads and cheaper fares. My husband and I traditionally love to fly on New Year’s Eve, ever since the day we met…

New Year’s Eve has never been that big of a deal to me. Still, I like the excuse for a celebration, so on New Year’s Eve 10 years ago I picked up a trip working from New York to San Diego. I brought along homemade brownies and the ingredients for pear mimosas for the crew once we got there.

That flight was a festive one, with the crew in party mode since it was New Year’s Eve.  I was the Purser (lead flight attendant) on that flight, meaning I had the responsibilities of making announcements and taking care of any problems that might arise in flight. Normally that would mean I was mostly stationed in First Class, but again, we were in a festive mood, and I was often walking to the back of the plane to chat with the flight attendants back there.

Each time I passed through Business Class, the passenger in 9H smiled at me. I told my galley flight attendant, John, “9H thinks I’m cute, he keeps smiling at me.” John was himself married to a flight attendant and always liked to see fellow co-workers happily matched. He walked by 9H and came back saying, “He’s cute…go for it”!

Although the flight was relatively easy, I was kept busy and every time I stopped to chat with 9H I got interrupted. The seatbelt sign would come on so I had to make an announcement and check for compliance, a crewmember would need my assistance with something, the cockpit would want something, etc. So I barely got to talk to 9H.

Then, at the end of the flight, as I walked down the aisle, 9H was standing there waiting for the lavatory. We talked for just a few minutes, but enough for me to say I was planning to move to San Diego in 2 months and for him to mention an EX-girlfriend. I figured he was interested in me, but didn’t want for him to give me his number forcing me to be the one to call him. I jotted down my email address on my business card and as he deplaned, I gave it to him. (I thought he would be giving me his card, which he had planned to do, but since 8 of us flight attendants were festively at the door saying goodbye, he didn’t think it was appropriate timing. He had planned to wait for me in the terminal.)

Well, when I returned home from my trip, I had an email from him. (This was before we had email on our phones…can you believe there was such a time?) We began emailing for a couple of weeks, then started talking on the phone. It was the last trip of January when I finally got another trip to San Diego and we went out for dinner. We had developed a friendship by that time, and, as the saying goes, “The rest is history.” We dated long-distance for 1.5 years; I moved to San Diego, then 1.5 years after that we got married in November 2006.

“9H” is Wally Henry, professional sailboat racer, America’s Cup Champion, my wonderful husband, and father to Ella and John. He’s flown nearly 3 million miles. With that kind of meeting we were destined to be a traveling family. I love the travel opportunities we both get through our jobs. I am excited about all the adventures that await us!
