BEST SWIM DEVICE: PUDDLE JUMPERS

We love this floatation device! Stearns Puddle Jumpers are a Coast-Guard approved flotation device designed for children 30-50 lbs. The great thing about Puddle Jumpers is that they allow for full range of motion, so the child can swim but isn’t at risk of going under. Puddle Jumpers will not roll the child onto their backs, like other life vest, but are great for swimming or wading at the beach.  Ella absolutely loves wearing it and I feel better knowing that she is safe. She’s always wanted to swim by herself without being held, and in the ocean I just don’t feel safe letting go for even a second. But with the Stearns Puddle Jumpers I know she’s okay and I can let go and just stay beside her. She’s also comfortable leaving it on when playing on the beach or poolside. They have super-cute designs too! Although it’s slightly bulky, it is still easy to pack. Just stuff clothes in and around it and it doesn’t take up much space and it’s very lightweight. Puddle Jumpers range in price from  $19.99 to $39.99 and come in many different designs as well as two materials.

Awake before the Early Bird

I went to bed at 2am because I stayed up trying to get things done around the house. And because I waited on the phone for 90 minutes for customer service-that was supposed to be 24 hours-to answer. No one ever did answer. For 90 minutes I listened to the same lousy easy-listening music. It repeated the same 8 notes 5 times, then, at a slower tempo, played those 8 notes more emphatically on the piano so the listener could REALLY get the horrible tune stuck in their head. It worked. Migraine-level headache and the song looping through my head for another hour. I turned on the TV to help get rid of the song and the show playing was BARNEY! Seriously? Quickly hitting the power button, I resorted to singing Disney Jr. songs to kick the ,pre annoying tune out of my brain.

I can’t get things cleaned up during the day because my 4 year old requires my full attention. 5 minutes unsupervised can be disastrous. Last occurrence was a wall full of colorful marker drawings. The wall had been freshly painted.

3:30am…I am awakened by a dripping sound. I sit up and listen. Yes, I definitely hear a dripping sound. I spring out of bed and discover there is water dripping from the ceiling. It can only mean one thing: Wally’s daughter is in the bathroom with the water on. I run upstairs and find Wally’s daughter sitting on the bathroom counter with her feet in the sink, water running. The floor is soaking wet with what must be 10 gallons of water. I send her to her room and begin damage control. I go downstairs and gather a bunch of towels. One minute later I’m upstairs and I discover Ella with her hair detangler, lid off, the entire full bottle now poured out on her bed, stuffed animal, and floor. She just wanted to brush the (stuffed animal) Chicken’s hair. Scolding, removing detangler bottle, re-occupying Ella with something less destructive, then on to the water works clean up….

While I am cleaning, Ella draws a beautiful rose garden for me. trying make me happy. I tell her it’s beautiful and I love her, but I am very unhappy still about the mess and about her being awake playing in the middle of the night. .

IMG00290-20120625-0426

Towels put in the washer, dehumidifier brought into the bathroom….Ella is hungry. “Can I please just have a little, tiny night-time snack? Okay, she probably really is hungry. I only gave her hummus and crackers, cottage cheese, and fruit for dinner. I need to feed my daughter a little better.

So now it’s 4:45. Ella is eating her night-time snack of a peanut butter and honey sandwich, milk, and a banana. She really was hungry. The birds are beginning to chirp their morning song. All I want to do is sleep but I know I will have to wait until Ella is completely asleep before I leave her room. Otherwise who knows what further mischief she will find.

I am writing this so that tomorrow…or maybe next week…or maybe next year, I can laugh. This is a scenario I never imagined would happen, especially not with a 4 year old. When I was up half the night with an infant I thought, “Well, at least in a year or so I won’t be awake all through the night.” Too bad I was wrong…(Don’t tell any first-time parent of a newborn!)

Photo Friday- Cabin Fever Cure

We haven’t had a chance to fly anywhere since April and Ella has cabin fever! Today we were driving and she was feeling extra grouchy. She said, “Your job is to drive me to the airport! I’m going to San Diego all by myself!” (She’s four…where did she get the idea she could fly alone?) Needless to say, we didn’t go to the airport today. But we did find a fun adventure. We stopped by Reef Shack while we were out. What a fun adventure! It’s a just a small store, but has great Reptiles and Saltwater Fish as well as some beautiful Coral! The employee was so nice to Ella and let her “hold” this Bearded Dragon!

This story is just to remind you that even when you can’t fly away, you can still have great adventures. When you’re visiting a new area it’s great to see the tourist sites and that’s usually enough to keep you occupied. But through the summer months, don’t overlook the local (and free!) “area attractions” that can be as simple as a pet store. Just don’t give in to requests to buy a dozen mice as pets. Haha…

Routines vs. Schedules- Simplified

As we settle into our new home it has become painfully obvious that we need to establish more of a routine for our family. Ella, at age 4, is craving more predictability in her day. And my husband and I need a better routine so we can get more accomplished. We have always loved our flexible schedules, but without a regular routine we are having a hard time prioritizing our day.

Irene Gouge, Sleep Consultant for Loving Lessons, offered her help and wrote this guest blog post about creating routines. I know it will be useful to us and hope that you will also find it helpful. When you travel, having a good routine in place will help your child feel more comfortable and will  adapt more easily to the other changes in their day.

Routines vs. Schedules- Simplified

by Irene Gouge

Everyone needs a routine! But why? Children from birth all the way into adult years, moms and dads alike need routines! It keeps life in order, allows predictability, and is one of the many social cues that lets our brain know what to do or how to respond. Children need routines to feel safe and secure and to have predictability in their day. Children thrive on routine. It’s just a matter of creating these simple routines and making them a natural part in the rhythm of your day.

Adults need schedules. There needs to be a time keeper that helps keep routines in place. Some people hear schedules and think- “must be rigid and timely”. Sometimes yes, but most of the time flexibility is important, especially when dealing with young children. Depending on your child’s age, feeding and sleeping can vary by 15 minutes or so.

This is what a natural rhythm looks like in my home with my 5 and 3 year old. You’ll notice that the bold and colored items are the routine that my children depend on everyday to know what time it is and know what will take place. It may sound crazy, but it’s true, and Connor has always been my high needs and sensitive child, so I have had to adjust my parenting to match his needs. You might be wondering- what does play look like? Each day is different. Some days its puzzles, blocks, reading, going to the park, errands, grocery shopping, the pool, library, or whatever the day may bring. You can add and modify your day and schedule- and we can be quite active, but no matter what we do- we need to include these bold items in our day to have success and adaptability with our children.

  • Wake time is 6:40 when the green light is on!
  • Snuggle and cuddle time with a little show.
  • Get dressed and ready for the day
  • Breakfast 8:00
  • Play
  • Snack 10:00
  • Play
  • Lunch 12:00
  • Nap/Quiet time 12:30
  • Quiet play
  • Snack 3:30
  • Play
  • Dinner 5:30
  • Play
  • Bedtime Routine 6:30
  • Sleep time 7:30

Am I rigid about my times? No, but I certainly don’t try to push the limits since I know my children’s bodies are ready to take in nutrients or rest around certain times and I want to work with their natural body clock to avoid meltdowns. Many parents worry that it can be restraining. However I find it quite the opposite and get more comfort in the routine and it makes it easier to plan my day, to plan snacks or meals to go. It’s just a small shift in our thinking and it becomes super easy way to enjoy the moments with our children.

Are you getting ready to get routines in place in your home? Here are a few key questions to think about as you create your plan:

  • Wake up routine– How do your kids know it is the start of a new day? What do you do to connect after a night of 9-11 hours of sleep?
  • Transitions routine– How do you connect with your child before you change gears? What are the expectations and how do you transition smoothly to end one activity and start a new one?
  • Mealtime routines– How is everyone contributing to the meal? What is the expected behavior before, during and after the meal?
  • Bedtime routines– How do you wind down and end your day? What does the process look like in your home?
    • Typical bedtime routines include- bath and PJ’s, brush teeth, potty, read books, snuggle and cuddle, lights out- time to sleep-leave the room with our child awake!

This is an example of a bedtime and morning routine check list that I use with my boys. You can use a clothes pin to help check off completed items. Of course you can create your own, take pictures of your child doing the steps to the routine to make it more fun and personal.

clip_image004

It can seem overwhelming or tedious to have to come up with these natural routines children need, but it’s well worth it. Sometimes as adults we forget that our little ones need a step by step plan to feel success in what they are doing. Establishing these routines eases you into your day, eliminates power struggles, and helps you end on a connected and calm way. Think of the routines as positive habits to create success all day!

Giving Thanks to Veterans

As we take time out to remember those who gave their lives for our country this weekend, I remember this awesome Naval Officer on one of our flights. When Ella told her, “Thank you for keeping us safe”,  she immediately took her flag off her uniform and gave it to Ella. This Officer was returning home from Baghdad after being injured and hadn’t seen joyful children in over a year. She was so happy to hear Ella’s gratefulness and SHE is the one who requested this photo. I am honored beyond words. This photo and that flag we will treasure forever. Our freedom is not free and we are so grateful to those who choose to serve our country to protect us.

You can instill this good habit of thankfulness in your children too. Any time you see military in uniform, prompt them to say thank you. At age 4, Ella is just beginning to think of it herself without prompting. We can never thank our military (past and present) enough for the sacrifices they make for our freedom.

6 Summer Tips For Flying With Kids

6 Summer Tips for Flying With Kids

These 6 tips for flying will apply to any traveler, whether a child or not:

Bring a sweater/Don’t wear shorts.

gap outfitThe airplane heats up on the ground and then once the air conditioning has full power, it really cools off. If you’re wearing shorts and a tank top, you’re going to be cold in flight. Not many airlines carry blankets in coach anymore, so be prepared. At the very least bring a thin sweater. I usually dress Ella in comfortable light cotton pants and a short sleeve cotton shirt and have a sweater for her as well as her blanket. For infants I like to dress them in one piece outfit like Carter’s Sleep ‘N Play Outfits. Remember to bring several changes of clothes for infants and at least one change of clothes for everyone else.

Don’t promise a window seat to your child.

It’s best to not talk about what seats you’ll have until you’re in them. I have seen so many children highly disappointed when they discover their “window” seat lacks a window. Also last minute equipment changes can mean you don’t get that window seat you booked after all. Try to get excited about the aspects of travel that are consistent and keep the kids flexible about seating arrangements.

Carry a fan.

summer tips flying

Airplane’s air conditioning systems SHOULD work on the ground, but I’m sorry to say I have experienced MANY with inefficient cooling systems. When it’s 130 degrees on the Tarmac, the plane is going to be hot. If there is a ground delay, that heat can become unbearable. A fan like this would be lots of fun to keep in your travel bag. It will add to the festive feeling you’re hoping to achieve when flying as well. If you didn’t pack anything to help cool off, the safety briefing cards work well as a fan!

Be prepared for delays.

summer tips flying

Summer heat often means thunderstorms. Even if there are not storms in your area, your inbound plane might be delayed because of storms in another area. Always have extra snacks and extra activities available. One of my favorite things to pack for the young kids is a small bottle of bubbles. It fits easily in your Quart-sized Liquids bag, and can be used to distract a fussy baby, whining toddler, or grouchy preschooler.

Stay Hydrated.

Summer Tips Flying

Flying makes you thirsty and dries your skin. I hate spending money in the airport, but I ALWAYS buy a bottle of water for the flight. Yes, they have water on the airplane, but there is a limited supply. Skin and lips get dry too. I use a cream moisturizer when I fly and make sure I always have lip balm for Ella and for me. (I prefer Burt’s Bee’s for myself, but the peppermint oil stings kid’s lips. Make sure to pack a kid-friendly balm for the kids.)

Force a cheerful attitude.

Summer Tips Flying

If you’re having one of those “everything-that-can-go-wrong-does” days, start laughing. Get your kids to laugh too. It won’t solve any of the problems but it will help you gain a new perspective. In the words of Erma Bombeck, ‎”If you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.”  If anything is going to go right on days like that, it will be up to you to make it happen. Some of the worst days in my life have become memorable (in a good way) because I changed from looking negatively at them and found the positive (even if it was a stretch!).

Photo Friday-There’s No Place Like HOME

We’ve just moved into a new house after our coast-to-coast move in March followed by 2 months in my in-laws house. We’re still settling in, so I apologize for not updating the website as often as I should. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate in Delicious Baby’s Photo Friday Fun, though, so I’m taking a few moments away from unpacking to post this.

If traveling with kids is sometimes rough, so is moving with kids. They crave familiarity and the additional stress to the adults plus the new environment makes things a little scary for the kids. Ella is excited for this new adventure, but still misses “home” (the old one). We recently read a Toot & Puddle book where Puddle got homesick. Toot said, “I get the same way. I love to travel, but when the time comes, I love to go back home.” We’re anxious for this new place to become “home” for us.

It shouldn’t take long, with enjoyable views like this:
